the diamond clarity

  • The Diamond Clarity

In our last two blogs we’ve discussed carat weight and colour in diamond grading by 4C ’s, i.e. colour, cut, carat weight and clarity, let us now talk about diamond clarity.

When we talk about a diamond’s clarity, we refer to the presence of identifiable characteristics like blemishes and inclusions within the gemstone.

Since diamonds are formed naturally after sustaining an incredible amount of pressure unlike artificial diamonds in sterile laboratories, it is not surprising that most of the natural diamonds have flaws – visible and invisible to trained or untrained eyes.

Generally, diamonds have two kinds of flaws- blemishes and inclusions. While blemishes are the flaws on the surface like scratches, chips and pits, inclusions are internal flaws caused during the process of diamond formation. Such inclusions could be air bubbles, cracks and other non-diamond minerals found in the natural diamonds. Diamonds with no or few inclusions and blemishes are more highly valued than those with less clarity because they are rarer.

Diamond grading for clarity

A 10X loupe magnification is used to grade the diamonds on Clarity. The grades range from ‘Flawless’ diamonds with not at all inclusions and blemishes to the ‘Included 3’ diamonds with a lot of, heavy blemishes and inclusions visible to naked eyes.

  1. F Flawless: This type of diamond is extremely rare with no internal or external flaws.
  2. IF Internally Flawless: This type of diamond is also very rare which has no internal flaws but some surface flaws are found.
  3. VVS1-VVS2 Very Very Slightly Included: There are two grades of such grade. This type of diamonds has very minute inclusions which are extremely difficult to detect even under 10X magnification by qualified gemologist.
  4. VS1-VS2 Very Slightly Included: In this grade of diamonds minute inclusions can be seen only with difficulty under 10X magnification by qualified gemmologists.
  5. SI1-SI2 Slightly Included: Inclusions in this grade of diamonds can be detected easily under 10X magnification.
  6. I1 -I2- I3 Included: With three different grades, flaws and inclusions in diamonds under this grade category are easily visible under 10X magnification. In fact, the inclusions are very much visible to the untrained eyes as well. Such grades of diamonds are not recommended for buying.

Even though the existence of such characteristics (blemishes or inclusions) do cast down the diamond’s clarity grade, they can also be taken as the proof of every individual diamond’s identity because no diamond is similar to the other.  GIA certificates carry information on what is called as “plot” of a diamond’s inclusions — imagine it as a “diamond fingerprint.” Since no two diamonds are the same, correlating the uniqueness of your diamond’s clarity characteristics with the plot given on the diamond certificate offers affirmation that the diamond you pay for is the same diamond you receive.
