Beautiful Heart Shaped Diamonds

A heart-shaped diamond is a personalised cut that combines two pear diamonds to create the symmetrical shape of a heart. Unlike other shape types, heart cut diamonds are made for personal taste rather than precise grading measurements.

Basic Heart Cut Diamond Anatomy

For exceptional brilliance, a heart cut diamond relies on perfect symmetry. It is critical that the two halves of the heart are identical. The wings of the heart require a slight round shape while the cleft, between the two lobes, should be sharp and distinct.

A stone’s silhouette ranges from narrow to fat. An ideal heart cut diamond silhouette is up to personal preference. Traditional heart-shaped diamonds have an L/W ratio of 1.00. Any variance on either narrowness or fatness is usually influenced by the setting the stone is put in.

Apart from symmetry, carat weight also influences the aesthetic value of a heart cut diamond. To fully distinguish the heart shape the stone should not be less than 0.50 carats. Anything less than 0.50 will have their shape compromised, especially if they are set in prongs.

Table, Depth, Girdle, Culet, and L/W Ratio define diamond anatomy. A typical heart cut diamond has these approximate dimensions:

Table %

The percentage of the diamond that the table takes up.

53-63

Depth %

The depth percentage of the lower part of the diamond.

61-67

Girdle

The ideal thickness of the diamond’s girdle.

Very Thin to Slightly Thick

Culet

Whether or not a cutlet cuts into the bottom is ideal.

None

L/W Ratio

The ratio of the diamond’s length and width.

0.95 - 1.02

The most popular settings for heart shaped diamonds are pendants, engagement and wedding rings. The setting for loose heart cut diamonds is important because of its delicate shape. Slightly narrow cuts (L/W 1.05 - 1.15) tend to suit pendants more. While wider cuts (L/W 0.85-1.00) look more appealing in ring settings.

The History Of Heart Shape Cut Diamonds

Heart cut diamonds have also been renowned in popular culture. The infamous stone first appeared in 1605 in Frans Pourbous the Younger’s painting “The Gonzaga Princess”. However, the term ‘heart’ was used to describe triangular cuts. It wasn’t until the end of the 19th century where we began to see the shape develop into the modern heart cut.
