Outstanding Radiant Cut Diamonds

The radiant cut is a something diamond that combines the brilliance of a round cut and distinctive shape of an emerald. Radiance cut diamonds are the first square cut to have a complete brilliant cut for its brown and pavilion. The vibrant square shape of a radiant diamond makes it one of the most sought out shapes for fine jewellery.

Basic Radiant Cut Diamond Anatomy

A radiant cut distinguishes itself from the princess cut because it has cropped corners. The square profile of the diamond demands specific L/W ratios to be valued highly.

There are two ideal L/W ratios. The traditional square shape should have an L/W ratio between 1.00 - 1.05, while rectangular shapes can fit anything up to 1.50 L/W ratios.

Depending on the L/W ratio of the stone a radiant cut can have up to 70 facets. The high number of facets help the diamond maximise its fire and brilliance.

Some radiant cuts that have a long, rectangular shape can have a bow-tie effect. This is where light travels into the stone and leaves a distinct dark shade that looks like a male bow-tie. The bow-tie light effect can be scaled from Near Invisible to Severe and can affect the sparkle of the stone.

The Table, Depth, Girdle, Culet, and L/W Ratio make up the anatomy of a diamond. A conventional radiant cut diamond has the following dimensions:

Table %

The percentage of the diamond that the table takes up.

62-70

Depth %

The depth percentage of the lower part of the diamond.

64-75

Girdle

The ideal thickness of the diamond’s girdle.

Very Thin to Slightly Thick

Culet

Whether or not a cutlet cuts into the bottom is ideal.

None

L/W Ratio

The ration of the diamond’s length and width.

1.00-1.03

Radiant cut diamonds are perfect for those who prefer a square design but want a similar level of brilliance that round cut diamonds offer. The striking features of a radiant cut diamond suit a vast range of jewellery settings. Radiant cuts are popular in stand-alone settings as well as part of a combination of stones. Stylish jewellery settings for radiant cuts include engagement rings, pendants and earrings.

The History Of Radiant Cut Diamonds

In 1977 Henry Grossbard sought to reinvent the traditional square cut. While the square cut was renowned for its beauty, it lacked in brilliance and fire. Grossbard revolutionised the diamond industry by incorporating emerald cut qualities with round cut brilliance. Now radiant cuts are gaining great recognition for its potential fire and brilliance as a square shaped diamond.
