Our Comprehensive Diamond Buying Guide - Diamond 4C's

Get the best value out of your diamond jewellery. Understanding diamonds is a crucial step in buying fine jewellery. At GemTrove our gemologists are passionate about diamond education. Learn from our helpful team about the 4 C’s of diamond grading.

The 4 C’s Of Diamond Grading

GIA certification is how we determine the quality of our loose diamonds. Each loose diamond is certified by the Gemological Institute of America. The GIA process outlines that four elements make up the overall of a diamond. The 4 C’s stand for colour, clarity, cut grade and carat weight. We determine the true value and pricing of all our diamonds through the GIA method.

Colour

On the surface, it can be hard to notice the variance of colour in a diamond. Most mined diamonds possess a faint, yellow hue. The GIA colour grade assesses a diamond by the shade of this yellow tone. The less yellow colour a diamond has the value it is. A diamond’s colour is determined by a range of D (colourless) to Z (light yellow).

Clarity

Diamonds are known for its glimmering appearance. However, a human eye isn’t able to properly assess the true clarity of a diamond. To test the clarity grading of a diamond, it must be magnified closely. The thorough GIA clarity testing looks into any blemishes or inclusions in a diamond.

Cut Grade

Diamonds are available in a variety of cuts. A cut grade assessment goes beyond the general shape of a diamond. For a loose diamond to be tested for quality cut grading each shape is valued. From solitaire to halo, a diamond’s cut helps support its true value.

Carat Weight

The size of diamond can often be mistaken for value. However, it’s the density that determines the price and quality of a loose diamond. A diamond’s cost value rises as its weight increases. A GIA report can assess the true carat weight of a diamond, ranging from 0.25 to 5.0 carats.
