Asscher Cut Diamonds

Exuberant Asscher Cut Diamonds

An Asscher diamond has a square top and round crown. The square top resembles the shape of an emerald. While emerald is a beautiful stone on its own, it loses some fire and brilliance because of its rectangular shape. With a round cut’s crown, an Asscher diamond can maintain maximum fire and brilliance.

Basic Asscher Cut Diamond Anatomy

Asscher cut diamonds traditionally have 58 large facets. Therefore, it facilitates a high colour and clarity grade than other cuts. Because of its sparkle potential, it has become one of the most sought out diamond shapes.

Since 2001 the Asscher diamond cut was redesigned to have 74 facets, increasing even more in brilliance and total value.

The anatomy of a diamond is defined by its Table, Depth, Girdle, Culet, and L/W Ratio. An Asscher cut diamond has the following approximate dimensions:

Table %

The percentage of the diamond that the table takes up.

61-69

Depth %

The depth percentage of the lower part of the diamond.

61-67

Girdle

The ideal thickness of the diamond’s girdle.

Very Thin to Slightly Thick

Culet

Whether or not a cutlet cuts into the bottom is ideal.

None

L/W Ratio

The ratio of the diamond’s length and width.

1.00-1.03

An Asscher cut diamond often has a very shallow crown between 10.1 to 16.5%. It has high depth for optimised clarity. Popular Asscher cuts are those that don’t have a cutlet. Colour purity is also an important aspect of ideal Asscher cuts. It’s common to find low colour grades in this cut of diamond than other shapes.

The History Of Asscher Cut Diamonds

The Asscher cut was invented in 1902 by the Asscher family. The distinguishable shape is named after its creator Joseph Asscher. The Asscher cut was regarded as a refinement of the conventional multi-facet cuts of its time. Since then it’s reputation has grown into one of the most sought-after diamond today.

The cut was created for perfect symmetry. Stand-alone emeralds and round diamonds were able to hold a certain level of fire and brilliance. But combined the Asscher cut’s potential for fire, brilliance and prestige are unmatched.

The original 58 facets were already known for its sparkle, but the new 74 facet Asscher cut has found a way to push the boundaries of fire and brilliance. The new diamond cut’s light performance is so clear that seven years after its creation the American Gem Society had to create a new grading system to compliment it.
